About Tara Crow

Pronouns: she/her/hers  [previously known as Tara MacGregor]

Welcome.

My name is Tara and I live and work on the lands of the Widjabul People of the Bundjalung Nation in the Northern Rivers region of NSW. My career as a Health Professional, Advocate and Educator spans over 30 years. I truly love what I do and have had the priveledge of meeting and learning from so many extraordinary people along the way to here.

How did I get to here?
My working life started in public hospitals as a Clinical Dietitian in 1991. I worked in the usual places for a new grad – chronic and acute disease management in inpatients and community settings both in Australia and the UK. This is where I “cut my teeth” trying to understand what it is to help another human be well. My path eventually lead me to specialise in oncology and palliative care.

Ten years in I retrained as a counsellor and psychotherapist while raising a young family. Working in an embodied, client centred Health at Every Size® (HAES®) aligned lens, revolutionised my practice. I worked principally in private practice from 2004, specialising in assisting people with eating disorders and mental health challenges. In 2013 I launched my business Practice Pavestones offering resources and training in counselling skills for Dietitians. Over the years this has grown and evolved in to my current suite of training for allied health professionals : Motivational Interviewing, Professional Boundaries and most recently, Professional Supervision.

In 2021 I founded Dietitian Supervision Resources Australia & International a philanthropic website and community building space promoting the practice of Supervision. This was the culmination of almost a decade of volunteer advocacy for the practice of Supervision in Australian Dietetics. I am supported by a dedicated team of colleagues, all freely giving of their time to help this initiative grow. I am extremely proud of DSRAI and the influence it is having on promoting the responsive, sustainable practice of contemporary Dietetics and the support it is providing those who engage with us locally and around the globe.

In 2022 I made the difficult decision to cease clinical practice. This decision allowed me to focus my energies on resource creation and community building for Dietitians and other Allied Health looking for ways to better support themselves and their clients. The demands in modern health services are becoming increasingly more complex and I now work exclusively in supporting health professionals to stay well themselves and be more effective, through training and supervision. Ever curious about ways to laugh more to make learning fun, I have recently added Laughter Yoga to my facilitation offerings.

One of the guiding principles in my work is wisdom offered by Rumi: ‘Let the beauty of what you love be what you do’. I am grateful to have the opportunty to choose this work.

Practice Pavestones runs regular training for health professionals with Tara as principal trainer.

Upcoming training dates can be found here.

I am always engaging in CPD. Over the years I have trained in multiple modalities for supporting people recovering from an eating disorder. I have a special interest in ethical practice and have engaged in numerous trainings through PACFA, LawSense and other providers including training for the resolution of compaints. I am a current member of the PACFA College of Supervisors and attend regular PD offered through that group.

I stand on the shoulders of many colleagues who have given graciously to me throughout my career. I am deeply grateful to those clients who have trusted me with their stories over the years – from you I have learned more than any degree could have ever taught me.

I try now to use what I have, to give back, whilst also building a viable business. I believe that community can change the world we work in, and that compassion-in-action informs a culture for ourselves and our clients, that builds accessible and sustainable well-being.

Quality work matters to me. I consider myself a lifelong learner.

I am a cis-gender white woman who has received the benefits of being housed, raised and educated in a stable, peaceful community. I am able bodied. My various inheritances (genetic and otherwise), culturally centred appearance and education afford me an array of privileges to which many do not have access. These resources have made the more serious bumps in my life easier to navigate. My interest in chronic illness and mental health sits alongside my own recovery stories.

….you’ll find me quietly at home, in the garden with my partner and all the animals. Or being with my dear children, extended family and friends near and far, ……..and if I’m lucky – just listening to music and having a nap.
